What this means

The Variants and Metafields section adds structured information to a product.

Category

A category is a reusable product setup. It can provide metafields and variant options. For example, a clothing category can provide Material as a metafield and Size and Colour as variant options.

Important: changing or removing the category clears the product’s current variants in the editor. If this happens by mistake, select Discard before saving.

Metafields

Metafields are extra specifications created for the selected category. Their names depend on how your store set up that category.

For example, Fabric, Neckline, and Care instructions can be metafields for clothing. A red star means that the metafield must be filled before the product is complete.

Variant options

Options are the choices used to build variants. Common examples are Size, Colour, and Material.

Variants

A variant is one exact combination of option values. “Medium / Blue” and “Large / Blue” are two separate variants. Each variant can have its own media, SKU, weight, price, sale price, cost, replacement value, stock, barcode, and selling rules.

Simple example

A kurta comes in sizes S and M, and colours Red and Blue. The possible variants are:

  • S / Red
  • S / Blue
  • M / Red
  • M / Blue

Add each combination that you actually sell. You can then give every combination its own stock quantity and SKU.

What you need to know

  • Select a category before Upstorr can show its metafields and options.
  • Category options are created on the Categories page. The product editor uses those options; it does not invent new option names.
  • Select one value for every option, then choose Add Variant.
  • Upstorr will not add the same option combination twice.
  • A product can contain up to 10,000 variants, but merchants should create only the combinations they genuinely sell.
  • When variants exist, the product-level pricing and inventory fields are replaced by fields for each variant.
  • Use the location selector above the variant table to edit stock for one location. All locations shows the total and cannot be edited directly.
  • For an out-of-stock physical variant that can still be sold, Future stock location tells Upstorr which location is expected to fulfil the future stock.
