What this helps you do
Inbox can receive a WhatsApp message before that person has a full customer record. The right panel then treats them as a WhatsApp contact. Saving them as a customer lets your store use the normal customer record and history.
Before you start
Ask the person for a real email address and confirm which marketing messages, if any, they agreed to receive.
Steps
- Open the conversation.
- In the customer panel, select Add customer.
- Enter the person's name if you know it.
- Enter a real email address. Email is required for this action.
- Review the two marketing choices carefully.
- Select Save customer.
Upstorr will not accept an internal placeholder Inbox email. Ask the customer for their real email instead.
Understand marketing opt-ins
- WhatsApp: the customer can receive WhatsApp campaigns.
- Email: the customer can receive email campaigns.
These are permissions, not contact details. Having a phone number does not automatically mean a person agreed to WhatsApp marketing. Having an email does not automatically mean they agreed to email marketing. Tick only the permission the customer actually gave you.
The WhatsApp option starts selected in this Inbox form. You must still turn it off when the person has not agreed to promotional messages.
What happens next
The conversation becomes linked to the saved customer record. You can open the normal customer area for more addresses, tax information, notes, orders, and other customer details.
Common problems
- Save is unavailable: Enter a valid, real email address.
- The typed name disappears: Inbox avoids treating a phone-number-like value as a person's name. Enter a name without digits.
- You cannot add the customer: Your role does not allow customer management.
- You are unsure about marketing permission: Leave the opt-in unticked until the customer clearly agrees.
