What this means

A section is a large horizontal part of a page, such as a banner, featured products, newsletter form, or footer. A block is a smaller item inside a section, such as one heading, button, image, product, or menu column.

Select an item

Select a section or block in the left panel, or click content in the preview while overlays are visible. Clicking nested content selects its innermost block and opens its settings on the right. The left panel expands the section and parent blocks leading to that item. Selecting a different item closes the previous expanded branches.

Hover over the blue label in the preview to choose a parent block or section. Clicking the content again returns to the innermost block.

On smaller screens, open Sections to select an item, Selected item to edit its fields, and Preview to inspect the result. Show or hide selection overlays through the three-dot Editor tools menu.

Text and typography

Use the text editor to format headings, paragraphs, lists, links and emphasis. Markdown formatting and blank lines are preserved in the storefront text. Paragraph and heading choices follow the theme typography presets. For a text block, the editor choice and the block's typography preset stay in sync. Choose Custom to use the typography controls below the editor. Text size, weight, and line spacing follow the current storefront preview, including when you change preview size. The editor uses the Admin font; the storefront preview uses the theme font.

Preview an empty cart, collection or wishlist

When the theme supports it, select an empty-state block in a cart, collection, collection-list, or wishlist section to show that section's empty message in the preview. Selecting one of its nested blocks keeps the empty state visible while you edit. Select a product or collection card to return to the filled preview. For the cart, select Cart products or Summary to return to the filled preview; the empty preview hides the summary and checkout controls. This changes only the preview; it does not remove products, collections, or wishlist items.

When the theme provides these controls, Heading spacing controls the space below a menu heading. Link spacing controls the space between its links. Change them separately to keep the heading distinct from the menu items.

Accordion groups

The accordion group controls row padding, Answer spacing, and answer typography for its rows. Set these once in the group to keep the rows consistent. Question color and Answer color override the colour scheme for those texts. Open the information hint beside a setting name for extra guidance.

Edit matching items together

Hold Command on a Mac or Ctrl on Windows while selecting matching sections or blocks in the left panel. You can also use Select matching in an item's three-dot menu. Matching follows the underlying component and settings, so renamed items can still match. The counter beside the right-panel heading shows how many items are selected, and the preview highlights them all.

Change a setting using the usual controls to apply that change to all selected items. Other values and nested blocks stay as they were. Code editing is separate and is not applied to the whole selection. Undo reverses a shared settings change together.

Add section

Select Add section in the correct page group, then choose from the types allowed by that theme and page template. The available list changes because not every section makes sense on every page. The built-in error pop-up is a single shared item; an existing one cannot be added a second time.

Add block

Open a section and select Add block. Each section allows its own block types and may have a maximum number. If the button is unavailable, the section may be full or fixed by the theme.

Duplicate section

Select a section, then choose Duplicate in the right panel or its three-dot menu in the left panel. The copy appears immediately below the original with the same settings, content, blocks, and device visibility. Edit the copy independently, then save the draft. Fixed sections or sections that the theme does not allow you to duplicate will not show this action.

Reorder

Drag a section or block using its drag handle. A locked handle means the theme does not allow that item to move. Moving a parent block also moves everything nested inside it.

Rename

Renaming changes the organiser label inside the editor. It helps your team understand the layout. It does not necessarily change customer-facing text; edit the actual text field for that.

Hide and Show

Under Show on in the right panel, tick Desktop, Tablet, and Mobile where the section or block should appear. The sentence below the checkboxes confirms the exact result, such as Shown on Mobile only. An item with no checked devices is hidden everywhere, but stays in the draft so you can use it later.

To pause an item on every device while keeping your selections, choose Hide everywhere. Choose Show again to restore those selections. The preview switches at phone widths up to 749 pixels, tablet widths from 750 to 1279 pixels, and desktop widths from 1280 pixels. Save the draft and publish the theme before customers see the change.

Remove

Remove immediately removes the section or block from the draft, without a confirmation pop-up. Use Undo to bring back an accidental removal. The change is not stored until you press Save. Some fixed theme items cannot be removed. Use Hide everywhere when you are unsure; use Remove when you no longer need it.

Copy block and Paste inside

Copy saves a supported block and its nested content to the editor clipboard. Paste inside adds the copied block into a compatible parent. Pasting can be unavailable when the target does not allow that block type, the maximum has been reached, or the copied block is fixed.

The left panel can separate shared areas from page-specific content. A template section belongs to the selected page type. Header or footer groups may appear across many pages, so edit them carefully.

Unpublished product warning

If a visible section points to a product that is not published to the Online Store, Upstorr warns that the section is or will be hidden from the live website. Publish the product to that channel or replace it before publishing the theme.

Simple example

A featured-products section contains four product blocks. Drag the best seller to the top, hide a seasonal product, and add another product block. Only that section changes; the theme's overall colours do not.

What you need to know

  • Sections control page areas; blocks control items inside them.
  • Some items are fixed, non-removable, or non-reorderable by the theme.
  • Hidden is different from removed.
  • Every structural change remains a draft until saved and published.
