What this helps you do
A category is a reusable product template. It helps you give similar products the same choices and extra information.
For example, a Clothing category can prepare Size and Colour choices for every clothing product. It can also prepare an extra Care instructions field.
A category does not create a product. It only prepares the structure you can use while creating products.
Before you start
Decide which products belong together and which details they should share. Your staff role must allow you to manage categories.
Steps
- In the Upstorr admin, open Products, then Categories.
- Select Add category.
- Enter a Title, such as “Clothing” or “Electronics”.
- Add an optional Description so your staff understand what belongs in the category.
- Under Product Template, select Add First Attribute.
- Enter an Attribute Name.
- Choose Variants or Metafields.
- Finish the field explained below, then add more attributes if needed.
- Select Save.
Understand each template field
Attribute Name
This is the question or choice shown while editing a product. Use a clear name such as “Size”, “Colour”, “Material”, or “Care instructions”. Two variant attributes cannot have the same name, even if their capital letters are different.
Variants
Choose Variants when the customer chooses between versions of the product. Examples are Size, Colour, or Pack size.
Use Preset Values to prepare the usual answers. For Size, you might add S, M, L, and XL. Type a value and add it; use the remove button on a value if it should no longer be offered by the template.
Preset values are suggestions for product setup. They do not add stock or create a sellable product by themselves.
Metafields
Choose Metafields for extra product information that is not a customer choice. Examples are Material, Warranty period, or Care instructions.
The Default Value is the answer Upstorr prepares when the category is used. For example, a “Material” field can start with “Cotton”. Staff can change the value on an individual product when needed.
Limits that matter
- One category can contain up to 100 attributes.
- An attribute name can contain up to 120 characters.
- One variant attribute can contain up to 1,000 preset values.
- A preset value can contain up to 255 characters.
- Repeated preset values are not allowed. “Blue” and “blue” count as the same value.
- Attributes with no name are not saved. Upstorr warns you when every added attribute is unnamed.
Edit or delete a category
The Categories list shows each category's name and number of products. Search finds a category by name. Sort can arrange the list by name or product count. Select a row to open it.
Open a category from the list, change it, and select Save. If somebody changed the same category in another tab or device, Upstorr asks you to reload the newest version before saving or deleting.
To delete several categories, select them on the Categories page and choose Delete. Products remain in your store, but they no longer belong to the deleted categories. Deleting a category cannot be undone. If only some selected categories can be deleted, the ones that failed remain selected so you can see and retry them.
What happens next
The category becomes available while products are organised and edited. Its template gives staff a consistent starting point for similar products.
Common problems
- Save is grey: Enter a title or make a real change to the saved category.
- A preset value is rejected: Remove a repeated value or shorten it to 255 characters or fewer.
- An attribute disappears after saving: Give the attribute a name. Unnamed attributes are not saved.
- Upstorr asks you to reload: Someone changed the category elsewhere. Reload the newest version, then make your change again.
