Change how future document PDFs look or create a reusable custom document.

Before you start

Document designs use HTML and Liquid code. Liquid inserts order values—such as the document number, shop name, or line items—into the PDF. If you do not work with code, keep the built-in design or ask someone who does.

Steps

  1. Open Settings, open Tax, then open Documents.
  2. Select a document card to edit its design.
  3. Select Guide to see the values and Liquid rules that the document can use.
  4. Under Document design, select Edit code and make the change.
  5. Select Preview to create a sample PDF. The sample uses example information, not a real customer order.
  6. Return to Edit code if the preview reports a problem.
  7. Select Save only after the preview looks correct.
  8. To undo all saved changes to a built-in document, select Reset and confirm. This replaces your saved code with Upstorr's original design.

To make a custom document, select Create document, give it a clear Document name, edit the design, preview it, and save it. Custom documents can be opened, downloaded, or emailed from an order.

The gallery card shows the first page as a small picture. The full preview renders every PDF page in a scrollable area. Check every page, especially when a table can continue onto another page; a good first-page thumbnail does not prove the later pages are correct.

What happens next

New PDFs use the saved design. Documents already issued keep the design and information stored when they were created.

Built-in designs available on this page depend on whether tax collection is on. Custom documents remain a separate document type.

Common problems

  • Preview cannot be created: open Edit code and check the highlighted HTML or Liquid problem.
  • The preview area says the PDF cannot be displayed: create the preview again. Do not save solely from the gallery thumbnail when the full PDF cannot be checked.
  • Save is missing: Save appears only after the name or code has changed.
  • Reset is missing: Reset belongs to built-in documents. Custom documents have Delete instead.
  • You leave with unsaved changes: Upstorr warns that the changed code will be discarded.
  • A custom document is deleted: all its saved versions are deleted too.
